Texting while driving gets boot

A new law goes into effect Thursday that prohibits California drivers from texting while behind the wheel.
Under the new law authored by state Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, drivers will be fined $20 for the first offense and $50 for the second, although court fees can make the total amount close to $100 or $200.
“Texting while driving is so obviously unsafe it is hard to believe anyone would attempt it, but everyday observation as well as scientific data demonstrates that they do,” Simitian said.
